THE RISING OF THE MOON by Conall Kearney explores the legacy of decades of Irish civil war, documenting the resurgence of political and social tensions in post-Brexit Northern Ireland.
"I was born in West Belfast, an area that predominantly identifies as Irish Republican. This part of the city transcends mere history and is still largely affected by the conflict today, with one of the main factors being a large wall that separates Catholics and Protestants. This makes you aware of which side of the wall you were born on, so we all grow up with this awareness of our origins. Many people from this part of the city refuse to use the term 'Northern Ireland' and only refer to it as 'the North of Ireland,' as many do not consider this state legitimate. Historically, the foundation of this state was designed to place the Catholic community at a significant disadvantage."
